The Hellenic Canadian Research Institute (the Hellenic Institute) strongly condemns the unilateral actions taken by Cypriot MEP Fidias Panayiotou on July 1, 2025, in meeting with the so-called 'President' Ersin Tatar and others in the illegal, Turkish-occupied north Cyprus.
This action violates UN Security Council resolutions, and is an affront to all Greek Cypriots who were killed or who are still missing, and it also simultaneously sullies the memory of those who heroically fought against the illegal Turkish invasion over fifty years ago.
This action also constitutes a weapon for the illegal Turkish occupier, especially because the meeting was hosted at the very epicenter of where Turkish propaganda is propagated from - the "Presidential Palace" in occupied Nicosia.
The self-declared "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus" is not recognized by the international community, except for Turkey. Unilateral acts based on one's personal ideological perspectives have dire consequences in the real world. Whether directly or indirectly, such an act legitimizes the occupier - Turkey - and undermines the efforts of the government of the Republic of Cyprus that has been trying to resolve this problem.
The Hellenic Institute demands that Mr. Panayiotou fall in line with the positions of both Cyprus and the European Union on this very sensitive national security issue for his country.

Το Ελληνοκαναδικό Ερευνητικό Ινστιτούτο καταδικάζει τις ενέργειες του ευρωβουλευτή Φειδία Παναγιώτου στη συνάντησή του με ηγέτες της κατεχόμενης Κύπρου
Το Ελληνοκαναδικό Ερευνητικό Ινστιτούτο (Ελληνικό Ινστιτούτο) καταδικάζει έντονα τις μονομερείς ενέργειες που πήρε ο Κύπριος ευρωβουλευτής Φειδίας Παναγιώτου την 1η Ιουλίου 2025, σε συνάντηση που είχε με τον λεγόμενο «Πρόεδρο» Ερσίν Τατάρ και άλλους στα κατεχόμενα της Κύπρου.
Αυτή η ενέργεια παραβιάζει τα ψηφίσματα του Συμβουλίου Ασφαλείας του ΟΗΕ και αποτελεί προσβολή για όλους τους Έλληνες Κύπριους που σκοτώθηκαν και όλοι αυτοί που ακόμα αγνοούνται, και ταυτόχρονα αμαυρώνει τη μνήμη όσων πολέμησαν ηρωικά ενάντια στην παράνομη τουρκική εισβολή πριν από πενήντα χρόνια.
Αυτή η ενέργεια αποτελεί επίσης όπλο για τον παράνομο Τούρκο κατακτητή, ειδικά επειδή η συνάντηση πραγματοποιήθηκε στο επίκεντρο της τουρκικής προπαγάνδας - δηλαδή στο «Προεδρικό Μέγαρο» στην κατεχόμενη Λευκωσία.
Η αυτοανακηρυγμένη «Τουρκική Δημοκρατία της Βόρειας Κύπρου» δεν αναγνωρίζεται από τη διεθνή κοινότητα, εκτός από την Τουρκία. Οι μονομερείς ενέργειες που βασίζονται σε προσωπικές ιδεολογικές προοπτικές έχουν τρομερές συνέπειες. Είτε άμεσα είτε έμμεσα, μια τέτοια πράξη νομιμοποιεί τον Τούρκο κατακτητή και υπονομεύει τις προσπάθειες της κυβέρνησης της Κυπριακής Δημοκρατίας που προσπαθεί να επιλύσει αυτό το πρόβλημα.
Το Ελληνικό Ινστιτούτο απαιτεί από τον κ. Παναγιώτου να ευθυγραμμιστεί με τις θέσεις τόσο της Κύπρου όσο και της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης σε αυτό το πολύ ευαίσθητο ζήτημα εθνικής ασφάλειας της χώρας του.
