The great powers of the time, and especially the Allies, bear responsibility for the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the latter of which with incredible cynicism readjusted their policies so that the new order of things that would safeguard their interests would be based on a nationalist Turkey with a totally homogenous population, as a result of the genocides it perpetrated against its various ethnic Christian groups.

The Asia Minor Catastrophe and Greece’s relations with the West

The relationship between Greece and the West was a complex one with many parameters. The complete national restoration of Hellenism was not particularly desirable. This had long been seen as a great threat to Western interests. On the eve of the 19th century, Félix de Beaujour wrote: “The merchants fear competition with the Greeks, a robust and hardworking people, who are already sending their merchant ships as far as the Thames. They say that they will fill all the ports of Europe with their fleet, at the expense of the European merchants.”

As it pertained to Asia Minor, the Allied powers revealed their true feelings towards the Greeks, and it was not always based on their harsh economic interests. Their tolerance of genocides was unprecedented.

Such was the responsibility of the Western powers of the time, that Metropolitan Chrysanthos of Trebizond wrote after the end of the massacre: “With the guilty participation of two great powers of the West, Germany and Austria, during the years 1914-1918, an entire nation, the Armenians, was massacred by the Young Turks, and hundreds of thousands of Greeks were forcibly removed from their homes and died in exile. With the guilty participation of the allied Christian powers of the West during the years 1919-1922, the national movement of the Turks under Mustafa Kemal, completed the work of the Young Turks.”

He also compared the attitude of the western allies with that of the Bolsheviks: “… who, despite being Bolsheviks, appeared more humane than the crews of the Allied ships, which during the Asia Minor Catastrophe in 1922 did not accept to save a single Greek.”

France and the USA

France encouraged the Turks to resist from the beginning. Its support for the Kemalist army found its expression in the Franco-Turkish Ankara Agreement. On the day of the signing of the treaty, Yusuf Kemal announced the decision of the Kemalist government to grant French financiers the exploitation rights of iron, chromium and silver deposits.

He also announced the desire of the Kemalist authorities to establish joint Franco-Turkish companies for the construction and utilization of ports, railways, etc. In a secret encrypted telegram from the French Prime Minister Aristide Briand to General Gouraud, which was later discovered, a command was given to deliver to Turkish authorities everything from military uniforms to airplanes, and equipment for a telegraph station.

After the defeat at Mudanya, the French authorities disarmed the Greek soldiers and handed them over to the Turks. This sentiment was also passed on to French journalists. They avoided informing the French public about the extent of the massacres in Smyrna and tended to portray any information about atrocities as “suspicious information of Greek origin.”

This attitude of the French was even criticized by Winston Churchill, who wrote: "Despite the efforts of the French to minimize these atrocities (i.e. of the Turks against the Greeks in Pontus and western Asia Minor) and for them to portray the Greeks as having committed similar atrocities but on a smaller scale, public opinion, as far as it existed, turned decisively against the Turks."

The Americans, from their perspective, were opposed to the dissolution of the Ottoman Empire, because they aimed at the creation of an American protectorate over all of Turkey. The American delegation sought to maintain the Turkish regime in Asiatic Turkey.

The United States wanted the Allied mandate for all of Asiatic Turkey, aiming for the oil of Mosul. The American Admiral Chester, requested privileges for a large railway line that would connect the interior of the East with the Mediterranean coast. After the end of the tragic events, the Americans compared Kemal to George Washington.

England and the Vatican

Great Britain, while initially supporting the Greek positions, did not intervene to limit the defeat of its ally, Greece. It was also completely opposed to any settlement of the Pontic Question. It rejected proposals for Pontic battalions that had been created by the Greek army to land in Trebizond, in order to create a small free area where Greeks from Russia who were being persecuted by the Bolsheviks would take refuge.

Furthermore, this detachment if reinforced, could have departed inland around Erzincan, in order to secure the rear of the Armenian army from the Turks.

This proposal was met with refusal by the British side. The British government's negative response to this proposal was because of British Commissioner Wardrop, who was stationed in Batumi.

The rejection of the proposal, even though it served the Entente's anti-Bolshevik struggle perfectly, was interpreted by D. Katheniotis as the result of the subjective attitude of the English Commissioner to accept the transfer of the Pontic Battalions to Batumi, because he was a fanatical Slavophile who was very sympathetic to the Bulgarians.

Neoklis Sarris argues that this specific British stance was a result of the change in the strategic choices of the British government. The British military staff supported Kemal Ataturk long before the Greek elections of 1920 and had proposed the preservation of the unscathed Ottoman territory in Asia Minor and by extension the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits with the surrounding Thracian area.

British responsibilities, at least for tolerating the genocide, were expressed to the English Parliament by Prime Minister Lloyd George himself, saying: “The Turks are raging against the Greeks of Pontus without being rescued by the Anglo-French forces.” The British representatives in Lausanne repeatedly reminded the head of the Turkish delegation, Ismet Pasha, that Turkey won because the English army had consciously remained inactive in August and September 1922 during the Asia Minor Catastrophe.

The Italians, together with the French, supplied the Kemalist army with weapons, clothing, trucks, airplanes, fighter jets and reconnaissance aircraft, while the Greek army was left completely helpless. On March 15, 1921, a secret agreement was signed between the Italians and Kemal for the supply of abundant military equipment. Italy's interest in securing absolute sovereignty in the Mediterranean had been manifested since the establishment of the Italian nation-state. The expansion of Greece into Ionia and Eastern Thrace posed a threat to the strategic interests of the Italians.

Even the Vatican was involved in the events. A few years after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, documents came to light proving that the Vatican had encouraged the French to help the Turks because it did not want the Orthodox to take Constantinople.

The Vatican feared that the Greek Orthodox Church would become a serious opponent if it were to establish itself in the old center of Eastern Christianity. Statements such as “the crescent moon on the dome of the Hagia Sophia is preferable to the Greek cross” were characteristic of the sentiments. The Vatican also preferred “Muslim indifference to Orthodox fanaticism”.

The three allied countries (England, France, Italy) finally rejected the agonizing request of the Asia Minor Greeks for the establishment of an autonomous Asia Minor state with Smyrna as its capital. They threatened armed resistance if the Greek army attempted to occupy Constantinople.

In the port of Smyrna, on the day of the terrible massacres of the civilian population, 21 Allied ships were present, of which 11 were English, 5 French, 2 Italian, and 3 American. Their only interest was the protection of their consulates.

The representatives of the “Allies” viewed the horrible spectacle with apathy and complete indifference. In Constantinople, the “Allied” authorities were completely indifferent to the refugees from Pontus and left them helpless, without any basic care, resulting in thousands dying of disease in the Selimie camp.
