Greece is taking a historic step forward in preserving its revolutionary heritage. A landmark donation contract has been officially signed to establish the National Museum for 1821, a new cultural institution entirely dedicated to the Greek War of Independence.
The agreement was finalized by Minister of National Defence Nikos Dendias and Minister of Culture Lina Mendoni. The project is made possible through a generous grant from the Antonios E. Comninos Foundation, represented by its president, Antonios Comninos, alongside Olga Mentzafou, President of the Board of Directors for the National Gallery - Alexandros Soutzos Museum.
The museum will find its home inside a piece of history itself. The Comninos Foundation is providing an exclusive donation of up to €12 million to fully fund the necessary architectural studies and the complete restoration of the Old Military Bakery building complex, located within the Goudi Army Park in Athens.
Once completed, the National Museum for 1821 will serve as the premier sanctuary for the country's revolutionary legacy, bringing together public and private collections. Upon the successful completion of the restoration works, the operation of the museum will fall directly under the Ministry of National Defence.
