Today, on February 9, we celebrate International Greek Language Day (also known as World Greek Language Day). This UNESCO-recognized day celebrates the unique impact of the Greek language on culture, science and philosophy, and the influence it had in the course of human civilization and history.

Greek has an
unbroken continuity of over 4,000 years of oral tradition and over 3,500 years of written tradition, which makes Greek the longest continuously spoken and written language in Europe.

The Greek language's highly
elaborate and often complex structure (vocabulary, grammar and syntax) could be attributed to major historical figures of literature, poetry, theatre, philosophy, politics and science, such as Homer, Plato, Aristotle, Aeschylus, Thucydides, Hippocrates, Archimedes and the Fathers of the Church.

With words present in many modern languages, Greek remains widely used in
international scientific terminology, especially in medicine, but also in mathematics, physics, chemistry, engineering, astronomy, quantum mechanics, social sciences and the humanities. Some of the Greek words used in the English language include, but are not limited to: democracy

The discovery of the alphabet 2,800 years was a true cultural revolution that decisively influenced the course of human civilization and history, after the Greeks added vowels to the consonant-based Phoenician alphabet. By adding vowels to the alphabet, it allowed for an infinite number of words to be written and to be widely circulated and understood from one place to another. One of the world’s greatest thinkers, the Italian Galileo Galilei, considered the Greek alphabet to be “man’s greatest discovery.”

During the post-classical Hellenistic period, Greek had been for six whole centuries the first international language, the transactional language of many different peoples (lingua franca) and, at the same time, a culture language (Kultursprache). The Greek language blossomed during the reign of Alexander the Great, it was accepted and embraced by the Roman civilization which adopted the Greek script in the form of the Latin alphabet, it was globalized through the language of the Gospels, it was discovered and promoted by the Renaissance and harnessed to the fullest extent by the Enlightenment.

For thousands of years the Greek language has evolved and could be divided as follows:

  1. Proto-Greek (Proto-Hellenic) - unrecorded; as far back as the 3rd millennium BC
  2. Mycenaean Greek - c. 15th century BC, recorded on the Linear B script
  3. Ancient Greek - Various dialects c. 1120 BC (Attic, Ionic, Aeolic, Doric etc...)
  4. Koine Greek (Hellenistic Greek) - c. 300 BC (the fusion of the Attic and the Ionic that became the lingua franca during the conquests of Alexander the Great)
  5. Medieval Greek (Byzantine Greek) - c. 600 AD (during the period of the Eastern Roman Empire, often referred to as the Byzantine Empire; this version of the Greek language is used to this day in the Greek Orthodox Church in Greece, Cyprus and abroad)
  6. Modern Greek - c. 1453 AD (a symbolic start date is often given coinciding with the Fall of Constantinople on May 29, 1453; however, it is often considered that modern Greek started evolving somewhere between the period of 1100 AD and 1453 AD)

February 9 was chosen as International Greek Language Day as it was on this day in 1857 that Greece's national poet Dionysios Solomos passed away.
