We are assuming the Presidency of the Council of the EU at a crucial juncture, taking into account the issues we are called upon to manage as a Presidency, the different views and approaches, but also the need to find the golden mean, to find solutions and to move forward together.
We have the Multiannual Financial Framework, the issues of Competitiveness, Ukraine, the issues of Defence and Security, Enlargement, and Migration. All of these are just some of the important issues that our Presidency will be called upon to not only manage, but also to find solutions, to further advance European integration.
In this context, strengthening the great effort to achieve the EU’s Strategic Autonomy is the number one priority of the Cyprus Presidency. And the issues I mentioned above fall precisely within this, touching on the strategic autonomy of the Union and the achievement of the great goal of the EU leading developments and not following.
The second priority of our Presidency concerns the substantial and institutional strengthening of the EU's relations with the countries of the wider Middle East. The region, the wider Middle East, is a region that is neighbouring the EU. We have common challenges, we have common strategic interests and it is a point of potential convergence with the United States, and as the EU we must clearly do more, to institutionalise our cooperation, but also to demonstrate in practice what we often say that the EU must have a 360-degree perspective.
Our third main priority is to provide convincing and permanent answers to issues that touch the everyday lives of our citizens, issues that concern the everyday lives of European citizens. I am referring, among others, to housing, the cost of energy, the protection of our children from social media, health and education issues.
We are therefore ready and I am confident that we will respond to this national mission, we will win this great challenge, we will further strengthen the internationally recognized perception of the Republic of Cyprus as a reliable, predictable, serious and effective state.
